Ryan Mecca | A rabbi says he first thought gunfire was the sound of a fallen metal coat rack. Then he saw people running.

The deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the U.S. occurred at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday. In this article, the rabbi at the service shared his recolection of the experience and tells how he tried to save his congregants. As a result of this horrific event, this rabbi states that Trump is “always welcome” in Pittsburgh, regardless of the differing opinions of other Jewish leaders.
As our country becomes increasingly accepting of all religions, races, and genders, it’s sad to hear these stories of someone who takes their opposing views to an extreme. I believe that even if you don’t necessarily agree with a group of people, you can still respect them as human beings. The rabbi in the article states that he doesn’t want this sort of event to break apart his synagogue and I think that that is important, especially for building the strength of controversial communities so that they can stand up for what they believe in. The author, Lindsey Ellefson, seems to agree with this as well, considering she wrote the whole article from the perspective of the rabbi, using his quotes.
This event relates to the reform movements of the Antebellum Age. As reform movements such as the women’s rights movement, temperance movement, and abolitionism arose, opposing groups began addressing the controversy, some in not-so-great ways. An example of an opposing group of the women’s rights movement is the Cult of Domesticity, which believed that women were meant to be secluded to home life. As these reform groups created controversy, so do religious groups such Judaism.

  1. It is truly disappointing for the county that is supposed to represent liberty and equality, to have these kinds of hate-crimes. The 1st amendment grants us the right to practice our religion, this man has violated it and stolen the lives of thes innocent people.
