How America has Incubated Antisemitism Hadley McGhee

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/28/us/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting/index.html

Ok get ready to have America’s mind blown.
Antisemitism makes no sense.

I honestly don’t understand why antisemitism is still a thing in the U.S..  As awful as it is, I understand why racism is still an issue in America- this country was built at the expense of “Coloreds” and this country continues to thrive at the expense of minorities. But most Jews are white, in fact most Jews in the US are descendants of European immigrants. Yet throughout history we have discriminated against them. In the colonies, Maryland allowed religious freedom primarily for Catholics but also other religions- except you guessed it- Jews. Since Reconstruction, the KKK has targeted Jews. In the 1930s, the US and Cuba turned away a boat full of Jews and other Europeans fleeing Germany.

We don’t talk about these historical events often, just as we don’t discuss American antisemitism enough. I hope this tragedy brings to light the closeted hate for Jews, and allows our government to address it in a way that we haven’t before, especially now that our executive branch seems to have nurtured a growing movement of this hate.

  1. I completely agree. I think the antisemitism of America up until now has gone largely unacknowledged but I hope that it might change in the coming years after things like this

    1. I agree with you that antisemitism in America has gone largely unnoticed or it has been normalized. I hope the future is brighter regarding our treatment of minorities as well.

  2. Emma Burkey: It is truly disheartening that it takes a tragedy to bring up this topic that is more worth learning about then most things in our textbook. There was so much evidence of something like this to come in the future that we should have seen to prevent it.

  3. It is definitely upsetting that any group faces discrimination in this country, whether it is for race, gender, religion, etc. I definitely have not personally heard as much about what Jewish people in this country still face, but this article helped me to realize that there are many groups in this country facing horrible discrimination, and this needs to stop.

  4. This is really frustrating , and its really sad that I've come across to many articles about discrimination . We need to educate the new generation about this. -Alma Alvarado-Cabrera
