Women Look Outside The Law For Abortion -- Rose Tharp

Abortion has always been controversial, but with the rise of anti-abortion political figures, it is becoming an increasingly heated topic. Now that Brett Kavanaugh is a judge, the law making abortion legal across the U.S. may be dropped. With the rumor of this circling, people have begun discussing the possibilities for self-induced abortions. Not coat hangers anymore, but pills. Misoprostol and mifepristone are two drugs that have begun being sold over reliable websites like Aid Access which came online in April of this year. These are not new drugs, but they are being put to use for home abortions, so women do not have to wait for hours in clinics that could be thousands of miles from their homes.

This is important to history because it shows what people will do in the face of obstacles. during the 1800s, a group of mostly women formed to fight for women's voting rights, and inevitably won. They faced adversaries like the Cult of Domesticity (which had women in their ranks) and the general stigma that women couldn't do anything but housework. Now, women are getting what they need to get done, even if they must find loopholes to do it.

  1. I hope that we will progress as a country enough for women not to have to take things like abortion into their hands

  2. I hope that this law making abortion legal is not just dropped-we've come this far, why go back? It's sad that women have to find loopholes.

  3. I agree. People make mistakes, and abortions have to deal with someone's personal body. WE should have the final say as to what happens with our bodies or not, not the law or a judge. It is even worse that women are being forced to find loopholes to escape this and are being forced to take their abortion into their own hands.

  4. I agree with Diya , don't forget that some women are raped and didn't want a kid. -Alma Alvarado-Cabrera

  5. You guys made some great additions to this post, and I really appreciate Alma's point. There are so many cases where it's unsafe/unhealthy for someone to have a baby and they want to turn to abortion. Especially in those cases, they should have access to a safe abortion. In the end, it is the choice of the individual. I don't understand why there is often so much input about this subject from people who don't have a uterus.
