Jude Holland - Trump Uses False Facts to Justify His Post-Shooting Rally

This week, a deadly anti-semetic shooting killed 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The same day, Trump held yet another political rally in Illinois. He had already planned this rally, and decided not to cancel it, even due to the shooting earlier that day. The president, after speaking against the attack, stated that he didn't cancel the rally because "We can't make these sick, demented, evil people important. And when we start changing around our lives and changing around our schedules ... we can't allow people like this to become important". Shortly after this however, he compared this to the New York Stock Exchange opening the day after 9-11, which didn't happen. It didn't open for another week. He claims his friend Dick Grasso got it up and running again immediately after the attack, although in reality many of the workers were dead, caring for family members, or injured.

I believe that the job of the president is to reassure Americans after tragedy strikes, and to uphold the ideals of peace and security in the country. Trump did do a good job at this in his attacks on the shooting, but with leadership comes responsibility, and to me getting basic facts correct, especially when dealing with an emotional, tragic event like 9-11, is very important. I think Trump pretty much says whatever he wants to say, and makes up facts to get his point across, which I think shows his lack of integrity as a president, and his lack of sympathy to the citizens of this country.

  1. It also shows his lack of education, as he selfishly speaks his and only his mind, forgetting that there are millions of American citizens which he is representing as well.

    1. I agree with you. Trump needs to put more thought into his words beforehand due to the amount of people he represents. I

  2. I wish I could say I was surprised by this behaviour but I'm feeling the exact opposite. This shows his immaturity and inability to focus on anything other than himself

    1. I agree with you. Similar to Kanye, Trump seems not to put a filter on before he speaks.

  3. I understand Trump has as much of a right to free speech as anyone else, but due to the stage he's on, he needs to put more thought into his words. Free speech does not mean you can misinform the people with false facts. That is negligence.

  4. Trump is immature and always makes excuses- there comes a point where responsibility is necessary. Very well written.
