Summary
After the Parkland Shooting that took place earlier this year, gun reform movements had desperately called for the nation to place stricter laws on gun control. Most of these efforts had been unsuccessful, but not in California. The state had already been known for having the strictest gun control laws in the nation. However, now way more, newer laws have been passed. These laws include raising the age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, banning anyone who has been convicted of domestic violence, or has been hospitalized more than once in a year due to mental health to obtain a gun for life, requiring anyone applying for a gun permit to have at least eight hours of gun safety training, and more laws in favor of the safety of the civilians. The NRA immediately spoke up about their opposition to the laws, stating how it violates the second amendment. However, the law will still go into effect on January 1st, 2019.
Analysis:
This article had been recently updated today at about noon. This ensures that it is up to date on any information that has been released about the passing of California's new laws. I had absolutely no prior knowledge about this, I didn't even know that California had been the state with the strictest gun laws before. However, now that I am informed about this I can say that it is very nice to see at least one state trying to make a change in the gun reform movement. This bold step California has made could set an example for other states to also pass stricter gun control laws in order to ensure the safety of citizens everywhere.
