Anna Speer - Rare Illness hits the U.S.

The CDC in Atlanta is investigating a 155 cases of acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that causes polio like symptoms, that has struck the United States this year.  Currently there are 62 confirmed cases in 22 states, including Texas. This is a rare but extremely serious condition that effects the nervous system, more specifically the gray matter in the spinal cord. Unfortunately, this disease is targeting children, with the average age being only 4 years old.  The CDC is still in the early stages of investigation.  Some patients  recover quickly while others continue to have paralysis and weakness.  The onset of this disease remains a mystery.  Is it due to more children not receiving vaccines? Hopefully an answer will come soon.

  2. This is kind of scary, a Polio like illness is in our country. I know Polio in the past has killed so many people which is why hearing about this worries me. I hope they can end up putting a stop to this illness, and eliminate it from the U.S. once again. - Joziah German

  3. How horrible and how odd! I hope that the people researching this disease are successful in finding a cure and vaccine.

  4. That is crazy! Hopefully we can find a solution and make the vaccine accessible to everyone.

  5. In the early 20th century, polio ruined the lives of many children. If a disease similar to polio is breaking out, then we should definitely aim to see if the two diseases are correlated.
