Zoe Williams: Nearly 90 Elephants Killed by Poachers

Botswana holds the largest elephant population in the world and has 37% of its continents elephant population alone.  This week 87 of these elephants were found dead within a legally protected area of the Botswana region.  Elephants Without Borders discovered that these humongous carcasses were of varying ages, showing that they were probably a part of a continuous poaching fever within that area.  This is evidence of Botswana's drastic increase in poaching due to the deactivation of it's anti-poaching unit.

Prior to this article I was aware of the major poaching crisis in Africa, but I hadn't been hearing too much about it as of late, do to the political crises that seem to be continuously presenting themselves in the United States.  The author seems to be of the opinion that poaching is a major issue and that it needs to be stopped.  I share this opinion with the author and I believe that was the goal of this article: to try and create a larger public awareness and larger consensus of animosity towards poachers.  This article is important, because there needs to be a growth in awareness for the safety of these animals.  We must continue to protect these animals other wise we might loose them, because this is not the only large loss of animals do to poaching, for example, in 2017 more than 1,000 rhinos were killed in South Africa by poachers.  If this is a continuous issue than we must not give up in the fight to save these animals' lives.

  1. i agree with zoe, i believe that this article was written to spread awareness to the world since many people are not aware of the animal cruelty that takes place in many countries. We need to let as many people know whats going on and try to find solutions to this problem.

  2. You could not be more correct in stating that the goal of the article was probably to create more public awareness. Poaching is such an enormous issue, not just in Africa as a continent, but in areas of Asia and of South America. As countries we should be raising awareness about global environment and wildlife issues; imagine if all celebrities focused on publicizing animal protection and environmental protection rather than promoting partnerships with industrial corporations.

  3. Why was the Anti-poaching unit deactivated?
