A woman by the name of Kelly Coltrain was found dead in a Nevada jail cell. Suffering from drug withdraw she received no medical assistance when symptoms began progressing. She remained inactive in the cell for several hours under video surveillance before authorities noticed anything. The investigation reveals that Coltrain asked for assistance for withdraw symptoms but received none and instead a mop to clean her vomit. She was arrested for suspicion of speeding about 110 miles from Carson City, right outside of Hawthorne. When the officer pulled up Coltrain’s record, he found many unpaid tickets and fines swell as unanswered medical history questions which led to the ultimate decision for arrest. After learning bail wasn’t an option, She confessed she was drug dependent and had seizures when withdrawn. After an hour in jail she began showing signs but was ignored, and the staff over the cameras reported they saw nothing out of the ordinary. This information and investigation just resurfaced and has been heavily reviewed. It gives us the question, Do we need better staff for these jails to avoid death?

This article was published August 31, 2018, because it was posted so recently it shows how America’s Jails aren’t safe or taking steps toward saving lives. It demonstrates how serious consequences are for turning away the eye and “not seeing.” Almost like the treatment of prisoners before the amendments, prisoners have fundamental human rights swell as ones to medical attention. These reoccurring events show how people are morally corrupt. This article was made to inform readers who want to stay up to date with current events, specifically this newfound death. This gives reads the power to speak out about human mistreatment. I believe this article is relevant because it shows both sides, the prisoners, and guards as well as a cop who arrested her. The pieces are relevant to today because not only does it let us know nothing has changed, it gives us insight and knowledge to let us begin to make the needed change.
