Karsyn Kelly- More than 9,000 children are injured by infant walkers every year, study find
According to a pediatrician study, which was published on Monday, between the years 1990-2014, about 230,676 children under the age of fifteen months had injuries that were from infant walkers. 90 percent of these injuries were neck and head injuries, The most common cause of injury was the infant falling down the stairs. 74.1 percent. Other cases included child touching things out of reach while in the walker, and falling out of the walker. The American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested to ban on infant walkers that has wheels attached. Theses devices only had disadvantages to them and they do not in any way protect children. Other countries such as Canada have decided to ban selling and the manufacturing of baby walkers. Dr. Tiffany Fischman, a California-based pediatrician, also create awareness to these sometimes harmful devices made for young children. She says she thinks people purchase these because parents think that they are "cute and fun", but in reality they can really hurt your children.
This article was really interesting because I didn't even have a clue that these walkers for young children were ever harmful. I hope this passage gets across to many parents who were thinking about purchasing these to their young children. You never want to take a risk of a magnificent danger, especially when you know that you have a way to avoid the issue at all costs.

I really had never thought about how many problems infant walkers caused until now, just like most of those ignorant parents. It’s so important we spread awareness about this so that no more innocent lives are destroyed for such careless reasons.

I had no idea that infants could be harmed from a seemingly harmless infant walker. This is also eye opening since I have younger family members that use infant walkers.I hope that more parents become aware of all of the things that could happen with infant walkers and other baby gear.
ReplyDeleteYou would never think that such an innocent tool could harm an infant in anyway. I believe that they should be banned because a walker is nowhere near as valuable as a child's life.
ReplyDeleteThis article was informative, but very one sided. I appreciate the point the article is trying to make, but maybe they should've brought up the counter argument and argued why that was wrong to prove the article's point more effectively.
ReplyDeleteIts so bizarre that something that is targeted as a safety tool for young kids is actually causing them harm. I am so glad that we never used the infant walker with my sister. Also its important that awareness about this is spread.
ReplyDeleteThere's been a lot of criticism of baby walkers, and, quite honestly, I'm a little surprised they're still around. In fact, my little brother's development of walking was negatively influenced by the repetitive usage of a walker as a small child.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have never seen the word "danger" described as "magnificent."
I have never heard of this before. I think its important that we raise some awareness to this sad phenomenon. I wonder what the main cause is to these helpless incidents. This was a very interesting article because I had never thought about the consequences of walkers, or even heard of this.

ReplyDeleteI'm actually glad that I read this. It makes me curious about what other products are also harmful to infants. This was unexpected.

Wow what the heck that so crazy I never would have thought that the walkers would promote child danger! They are always made out to be something for the parents to get a break from holding their child, but I guess that would be the safer option! ~ Mekinna Knight
ReplyDeleteIt's very interesting how far behind everybody is compared to the dates of discoveries and developments. It was figured out around 10-15 years ago that these walkers arent good for kids and parents still continue to buy them.
ReplyDeleteI think it's crazy how things designed for babies are harming them. I feel as if it's truly not anyone's fault but the parents and the makers could have and still can take preventative measures to avoid this.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting acrticle and i like how you chose something to unique and creative. I also really like how you approached this differently than i would have. I might have missed it but how does this relate to U.S History?
ReplyDeleteThis is awful to hear and it is so sad that so many infants pass away from something designed for babies. I never thought that walkers would promote child danger and I hope the makers can do something to prevent this. -gracie zytynski
