Chloe Meinershagen - Racial Slur Against African-American Governor Candidate Gillum

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article217524380.html

Andrew Gillum, an African American democratic, is running against Ron DeSantis, a white republican, in Florida for governor. The two are appealing to the bases of their sides, the far left and far right. While DeSantis was being interviewed on Fox News, he stated regarding Gillum that the last thing "we need to do is to monkey this up..." This statement is criticized for the usage of a racial slur, comparing African Americans to monkeys. Though DeSantis' communications director, Stephen Lawson declares it "absurd" to call him a racist, Gillum insinuates that it is ridiculous to stoop so low and "in the gutter" to use any hint of a racial remark, and he believes Florida will not resort to that culture either.

As far as my prior knowledge to this subject, I was completely unaware of the Floridian government conflicts, but I am aware of the racial issues in America and in politics, and the difficulty the public has to elect those other than white males. I can compare this to how while Obama was in office, Trump questioned Obama's citizenship, and Obama got much hate simply for being of another skin tone.

This article was published on the Miami Herald by Alex Daugherty and David Smiley on 8/29/18. This affects the article because we know it is written for those who live in Florida and/or Miami. It's written for those interested in the state politics of Florida. It takes a neutral stance, giving each side a quote from explaining their thoughts on what was said by DeSantis. It hopefully makes those on the far right possibly question choosing DeSantis after his comment, and that he is supported by Trump for governor, after Trump being criticized as racist as well.

Alex Daugherty and David Smiley created this article. Doing a bit of research, it seems Daugherty, a Columbia graduate, lives in Washington, and Smiley is a political reporter who lives in Miami. Daugherty, who's Caucasian, and Smiley, who's African-American, both contributed to this article. Their difference in color might have contributed to the neutrality of this article.

This article was most likely written for informational purposes, trying to best convey both sides equally, as well as producing facts about the situation. It's important to see the presence of racism in America's society so that someday we can rise above it.

  1. This is a very interesting article that I have not seen any other posts about. It is good to see the very neutral stance as you said. Also, it was very hypocritical of the communications director to say that calling DeSantis racist is stooping low while he literally called his opponent a racial slur.

  2. I enjoy the fact that this article is more neutral than not, but still stating the cold facts of this issue. I am so disappointed that to this day, racial slurs are still used at all, especially in order to have an advantage over a group of people. You would think that the difference of how far we've come from racism would've been greater than it is. This is a great article, and I enjoyed being educated about this specific issue that I hadn't known prior.
