A March to stand up against gun violence is scheduled for March 14th where students/faculty will hopefully walk out of schools from 10 am to 10:17 am (1 minute for each life lost). This #enoughwalkout was encouraged by the organizers of the women’s march and are demanding that legislation be put in place to regulate gun control laws. The survivors will also be protesting in Washington on March 24th. April 20th is another walkout for the anniversary of the columbine shooting.
As far as walking out, I can relate this to labor strikes. Obviously the circumstances are different but both the laborers and students faced/are facing poor conditions that prevented/prevent them from being safe everyday.
I was hoping Booker T could participate in this walkout but I believe we will be out on spring break. However, I think it’s wonderful that these students, despite everything they’ve been through, still have the bravery to keep fighting to make sure no one else has to go through what they, and many others, did. Too many adults underestimate the power of youth and they shouldn’t because we are the future and if we don’t speak up, no one will. I think ending gun control is a solution but we just need our representatives to help us get there. Fighting fire with fire is not the way to go. I don’t understand why people think giving teachers guns will solve anything. It creates fear. Having to go to school everyday knowing your teachers have guns is scary. It only makes it easier to get ahold of a gun. Schools shouldn’t have to operate like prisons, the world should just be made a safer place. I know people could find ways to get a gun but that’s not the point; the point is putting more effort into protecting everyone. I’m glad to see these students out, especially out against Trump. Trump prevented a mental illness check on guns and then has the audacity to point out that the shooter was mentally disturbed. “Must always report such instances”...these students did though and he still killed 17 people and injured more. Our government, our representatives, and our president needs to do something instead of wish for better. https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/18/us/national-student-walkout-womens-march-trnd/index.html
I'm glad that we as students have power to come together and tell the government that we won't stand for this anymore.
