Syrian Conflict: Will Powers End Up in a Direct War?

This article speaks about the horror of the conflict in Syria, and how the original conflict of the Syrian government against Syrian rebels has been completely replaced by much larger countries such as Iran, Russia, and Turkey seeking to resolve the conflict through military force. The potential for the conflict in Syria to become a fight between the larger powers "pulling the strings" is a dangerous thought and should be avoided.
It's unfortunate that allegiances to different sides are dragging more and more countries into this war, and I fear that said allegiances could start a war of much larger proportions. Luckily, the US has remained largely passive in the conflicts and has not used as much military might to attempt to end the conflict as many other countries.
