- Both Obamas spoke at the event, Michelle spoke about her father’s sacrifices, and that she was thinking about all of the young girls, and girls of color who will see portraits of women who look like them hanging on the wall. The artists, Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, are the first black artists to paint the president and first lady. The director of the National Portrait Gallery has praised both artists and believes that they represent the future and progress of portraiture in the 20th century.
- For 43 presidents and first ladies this is first time the portraits were painted by black artists, I was unaware of this fact. Michelle’s quote about representation is very true to its time, and with the past, for women and girls of color had and have very little representation in the entertainment industry, as well as the cosmetics industry.
