Trevor Turnbow//Panera Bread and the "Clean Menu"

Panera-Clean Menu

Panera Bread has claimed the idea of a "clean menu." It's a movement to remove artificial preservatives, sweetness, colors, and flavors from the menu of the chain. They've thus far succeeded in having a clean menu and now have debuted a consulting service for other chain restaurants to help cut out the artificial parts of their menu to appear to the "health nut" demographic. It has already helped out Chipotle Mexican Grill inc. to clean up their menu and are now moving to make their advice a more formal sanction of their corporation.
I think that this focus and action being taken by these companies is a pleasant change to the precedent set by other corporations who really just focus on the cheapest way to produce food and make money with no regard for the health effects on the customer. The capitalist society we live in doesn't really focus on the well being of the individual consumer, corporations have a history of taking advantage and manipulating the public for gain unchecked by any of the powers that be.  When you think about it we live in a nation where the preferences of the capitalist juggernaut really hold more sway than the government, which is terrifying, but it's nice to see a company like panera bread trying to do some positive good. :-) Even if they are now doing that positive good for profit as opposed to doing it just because it's good before.  (replygram: I want to become an anti-capitalist political activist who's with me?)

  1. I agree that it's nice to see a restaurant trying to take the unnecessary chemicals out of their food; I'd be interested to see Panera's stance on GMOs though. They may not be to a customer's liking, but unlike extra chemical preservatives they don't (as far as we know) cause health issues and can be extremely useful for getting low-quantity, high-price, or out-of-season foodstuffs.

  2. You are right in saying that the food industry needs to do a better job of cleaning out their menus. It should be their top priority to serve their customers with real natural food even if its not the most healthy for you...
