Liam Wise - New York Keeps the Statue of Liberty Open During Shutdown

Amidst controversy regarding the sudden temporary shutdown, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he intends to keep the Statue of Liberty open using state funds. Despite it’s status as a government building, the landmark will be back to work in New York harbor tomorrow. Cuomo says that a dormant Statue of Liberty “disrupts many tourists’ plans”. To remedy this, New York State made a deal with the department of the interior in which funds from the state could be used to pay government employees. From the shutdown up until then, Ellis island remained closed. Cuomo seems to think, additionally, that keeping the statue open is symbolic of the ongoing debate about immigration in America, saying “The concept of closing the doors to immigrants is repugnant to the concept of America.” This opposing voice to Trump’s immigration plans is sure to be recognized on account of the monument behind it.
