City Arrests Citizens For Handing Out Free Food
“The number of people living on the streets in downtown San Diego has increased by 27 percent over the past year,” reported The Union Tribune. However, the activists were handing food and toiletries to homeless people in Wells Park, trying to make a positive impact, are being arrested. Officers report that “food sharing is not allowed,” because it is dangerous and could cause diseases. However most activists believe that the true reason behind this ban is because officials do not want to “waste” resources on the poor. Activists stand strong and say “[they] will continue this fight [even if it] takes them to court.”
The main idea being conveyed is that those who are less fortunate should have to fend for themselves, and those who are more privileged should stand by and watch, which just is not right. This article correlates to the idea of Social Darwinism in APUSH and the ideas conveyed in the Gospel of Wealth. The officers represent the idea of Social Darwinism, while the activists represent the ideas discussed in the Gospel of wealth, exposing the horrors of society’s “system,” and advocating for what’s right.
