A lesbian couple has been faced with discrimination because the government refuses to grant one of their children American citizenship. Allison Blixt, who is a US citizen, and her Italian wife, Stefania Zaccari recently just had two babies in London, England. "The spouses each carried one child to term using their own eggs and an unknown sperm donor" to produce each child. While the American citizenship was granted to Ms. Blixt's son, Ms. Zaccari's boy was denied citizenship. The couple filed for a lawsuit.
Analysis:
I think it's really unfair that the boy who shares the blood of an American citizen, has an easy passageway into America than the boy who shares the blood of an Italian. This shows how racist, and discriminatory our country is. The government should realize that by not granting Zaccari's son citizenship, their family could potentially be broken up and damaged.

While I agree that the family could be broken up and that it is tragic for the family, the government technically hasn't broken any law. The baby who was not born of an American citizen and was not born in the United States doesn't get citizenship under the Constitution. However the government does need to improve its legal immigration system in order that the family can get US citizenship.
ReplyDeleteI understand the frustrations and acknowledge the horrible system of immigration and need for improvement, but I don’t see any act of discrimination from the information given. I don’t see any laws broken and the officials stated the issue was the citizenship status not the sexuality, in conclusion, I don’t see a reason for a lawsuit.
