'Flu' ends up being flesh-eating disease
Christin Lipinski, a wife and mother of three from Arizona, was diagnosed with what doctors believed presented itself as the flu on January the 11th. The family was reported to have ben planning a trip to Disneyland when Christin was taken to a local trauma center, after experiencing unbearable pain in her underarm-just two weeks after visiting the doctor. After multiple tests, doctors determined that the mother of three had developed extremely aggressive flesh-eating bacteria, known as necrotizing fasciitis. The bacterium spreads rapidly through the body, and can lead to death if it isn’t treated. Lipinski, who is a special education teacher, has had two surgeries to remove 30% of body tissue that was infected, however, she still remains in critical condition.
“Christin faces a very long road to recovery ahead with numerous skin graft surgeries, reconstructive surgeries, and physical therapy,” report reads. It just makes you wonder how much better off this woman could have been if they had caught it the first time... maybe her and her family could still have gone to Disneyworld.
The message of this article is how a woman suffered because something seemingly good on the outside, in reality proved a lot worse. This relates to the Gilded Age in APUSH because just like the woman, the time from the surface seemed fine, and due to overlooking the situation at hand, greater problems arose. For Christin, her health was a serious risk, and during the Gilded Age political and economic corruption continued to spiral out of control. In both cases not acknowledging the problem allowed it to progress further.

ReplyDeleteI like the comparison to the Gilded Age, because it really makes it easy to understand the dire situation. This is really terrible for Christin and I hope she gets better. I've never heard of any disease like this before, so I'm interested in how they can cure it.
