summary:
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and Unites States President Barack Obama had a meeting scheduled in Laos until Monday when the Unites States had to cancel. Until the obscenity, Obama was to confront Duterte about the Philippines' handling of drug dealers, including extrajudicial killings. President Rodrigo responded to this by saying, "Who does he think he is? I am no American puppet. I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people. Son of a b****, I will swear at you." In response to this, Obama will now meet with the president of South Korea instead. In addition, Duterte also blamed the United States for causing the unrest on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao. He said, "As a matter of fact, we inherited this problem from the United States. Why? Because they invaded this country and made us their subjugated people. Everybody has a terrible record of extrajudicial killing. Why make an issue about fighting crime?" President Rodrigo also said "Look at the human rights of America along that line. The way they treat migrants there. Obama claims that he wants his meetings to be productive and that if there is going to be a meeting he is going to bring up the Philippines' record of combating drug time since Duterte took office.
analysis:
The way I look at it, Obama is trying to save Duterte the trouble of having to meet with him if he really doesn't want to. However, in some ways I agree with the president of the Philippines, even though it isn't necessary for Duterte to publicly call President Obama out he does make a valid point about the United States' role in "his" country. Even though Obama is trying to help he really doesn't need to get involved with another country's affairs. It would have made sense if Obama was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on and how it may affect the United States but it doesn't necessarily affect us at all. Duterte also said that he shouldn't have to conform to American ways, "I am no American puppet," and he shouldn't. Our country has no business getting into something if it is only going to hinder us. The authors of the article are both from CNN and are presumably american so it makes sense that they think Duterte's comments are obscene and offensive but they also didn't consider the other side of the argument. Personally, I haven't heard much about anything going on in the Philippines which makes sense because it isn't related to me or my country and without looking it up I wouldn't have ever known about it. However, this article was most likely directed to those who are interested in foreign affairs. This article, in my opinion, was written to show the Untied States that Obama is going to stand up for himself and the reputation for this country which is helpful in confirming to us that we made the right decision as a leader.
