Kate Pinkerton - Earthquake connection with fracking

Summary- On September 3 there was an earthquake in Oklahoma, near Pawnee, OK. The preliminary earthquake was magnitude 5.6 with 10 other smaller quakes following. There was only one minor injury and several buildings were damaged. 35 disposal wells, created by injecting toxic water into the ground, have been shut down as a result of the quakes. Geological agencies have reason to believe that these wells are the cause of the earthquakes, as they put pressure on the formation next to the fault lines. These wells may also pollute ground water because they inject waste water from hydraulic fracturing into the ground. The earthquake was also felt in 6 additional states.
Analysis- This article was created by someone who is against fracking or at least the disposal wells associated with them. It was written soon after the Oklahoma earthquake, so the authors would have been more concerned with the effects of fracking. Because of these things the article has a negative influence on the audience about fracking and has the purpose of educating the reader on possible causes of the recent earthquakes. This topic is important because we need to be aware of the ways the harvesting oil can affect the earth, and how it can create bigger problems later and damage cities. Many times in history have people seriously damaged the environment while trying to get resources and not thinking about being environmentally friendly.

  1. I agree with you in how these current technological innovations for personal profit gain designed for harvesting nonrenewable resources have done much harm that more people need to be cognizant of. This is a repeating pattern, and I think that this article's informative standpoint really does an important job of educating people of the prominent dangers that could really harm us as a human race.
