Elizabeth McCullough - President of the Philippines curses President Obama

Summary: President Obama was scheduled to speak with the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. This meeting was recently cancelled because of comments the Filipino president made about President Obama. The White House wanted to meet with President Duterte to talk about how his country handles drug dealers and extrajudicial killings. Before this discussion could take place, Duterte publicly spoke vilifying statements about the U.S. president. He even used curse words in his speech. The meeting between the two leaders was promptly cancelled, and Obama is now set to meet with the president of South Korea.

Analysis: President Duterte's behavior mirrors that of a girl in middle school. President Obama called him out on an issue in his country that has been speculated by many others. As a result Duterte bashed him and called him names. It was completely childish, and not the kind of behavior you would expect from the leader of an entire nation.

Synthesis: The actions of President Duterte are similar to those of presidential candidate Donald Trump. His entire campaign has been centered around insulting his fellow candidates. Even before he started running for president, he was known for his loud mouth and lack of a filter. If Trump were to be elected, he could be the future President Duterte. Now that's scary.

  1. I agree with what you said about his actions being completely undiplomatic and unprofessional. A man of such high power should not act in such an immature way.

  2. I agree, I think that if we have a leader they need to be strong and not immature. The leader should be able to lead and not just be there and stand as nothing. - Skyler Tepedino
