Jessica Ramirez Gaviria, the sick girl who fought to protect her right to life, has passed away this past week. She suffered from a condition known as 'butterfly skin' and died in a Bogota hospital from health complications caused by the illness.Ramirez Gaviria, suffered from a rare disease called Epidermolysis bullosa, which causes extreme skin fragility and thinness. Epidermolysis bullosa causes the skin to blister as if it had been scalded by hot water. She could not stand her clothing because it rubbed against her skin and hurt. Her skin began to fall off. Her mother said she was hospitalized and discharged in the days before her death, but her condition deteriorated and she was readmitted Sunday. "She was doing very badly, there was a complication ... we took her back to the hospital and she never woke up again," her mother said. This relates back to history because throughout history we have been faced with illnesses that we have never seen before, and we came up with new ways to treat the patients and improve the healthcare system.
