"WDBJ: A small newsroom, struck by violence, covers its own tragedy" - Leah Messinger (period 1)

The article that I read was about the unfortunate murder of two journalists who worked for WDBJ in Roanoke, VA. On August 26, 2015 Alison Parker and Adam Ward were carrying out their normal day by interviewing a local business executive. Little did they know that by coming to work that day that they would be killed by Vester Lee Flanagan, a former reporter with WDBJ who had been let go from the newsroom a few years prior. After killing Parker and Ward, Flanagan released the video that he had taken with his phone during the shooting. After posting the video on his Facebook page, Flanagan committed suicide. The devastating news about their fellow employees was released by the news station that same morning.
This article is significant because it shows how scary and unpredictable our society has become. These innocent people were just going about their normal day and something devastating happened. This can be related to numerous accounts in our history where innocent and undeserving victims are killed out of the blue. One event that we all pretty much can remember is 9/11. Although 9/11 was on a much larger scale it is similar in that no one expected it or could have seen it coming. In conclusion, we must cherish every day because we live in a crazy world where anything can happen.

  1. You are so right, Leah. It is so devastating to hear about this tragic news. And the fact that it can be related back to so many other situations, too numerous to count, is even more devastating.
