In this article the government of Venezuela is enforcing stronger border control and it could affect the lives of millions of Venezuelans that live near the border. Many people cross the border from Venezuela to Colombia so they can to get to work, visit family, and even get certain medications that are not available in Venezuela. It's not just Venezuelans who are affected either. About 5 million Colombians live in Venezuela and many even have dual citizenship. About 8,000 Colombians have been deported or fled after militants raided shanty towns, for they were believed to be a prime source of smuggling. Because of the now rising fear of mass deportations, Colombians are leaving the country en masse. The U.N is even getting involved, as they think the crackdown may be a serious violation of human rights.
This is like if the U.S had as much border control with Canada as it does with Mexico. Americans have to go to Canada to get things like Kinder Eggs. However, Venezuelans have to go to Colombia to get things they need like sanitary wipes, medication, food, and hardware. In my own opinion his is a violation of human rights. It is going to be incredibly hard for Venezuelans and Colombians to see their family. People are being forced out of a country that they have called home for so long.
This is horrible knowing that people are having their human rights violated. Especially when it comes to villages being raided because they think it's a primary source of smuggling. But, it is great to see that people who have a say are stepping in, to help people who have had their rights stolen.
