Bill Willingham and Craig Kinney, co-owners of the Lakewood theater, are being accused of demolishing the historical site. Kinney assures onlookers that this information is just a rumor spread through social media. That statement is becoming harder to believe, on August 30, 2015 Erik Schuessler posts a photo to Facebook of multiple rolls of carpet from the theater in a dumpster. Later in September the co-owners will have to convince Katherine Seale and Landmark council that they are doing the right thing or Landmark will shut them down. The citizens of Lakewood have made a virtual petition for the theater to be made into an official landmark (you can find that link here, if you would like to sign.)
The 77-year old theater deserves to remain undisturbed with all of it's history intact; I believe that the only way this is going to happen is if the city of Dallas gets involved. This is why this article is important, it brings the "landmark status" petition to the attention of citizens. I would be devastated if this building was gutted. It's one of a kind; I have grown up with this building, and I can't imagine driving down Abrams Parkway and not noticing the theater's marquee. This theater holds many one-of-a-kind historical items that can't be recreated if destroyed, thus this building needs to be preserved and labeled a landmark.

Kenley Turner 3rd period- I agree, I think that the historical building should remain in tact. I think they do a good job for the most part keeping it relevent in a more modern area
ReplyDeleteI agree this historical building should stay in tact in our nation today we are getting rid of so many important historical pieces to our city especially our arts portions. We need these pieces/places for a look back on where it all began.
