Shelby Flowers – US Mass Shootings
Summary:
The United States is ranked among the top 5 countries of
civilians that own firearms and in the top 15 of public mass shootings. It stems from cultural and social
factors. The United States allowing free
gun ownership contributes to the social factors. Mental illness is another contributing
factor. Social skills and behaviors of
young people pave the path for most mass shooters. One positive of the mass
shootings taking place in the US is that fewer people are killed because of
training that our law enforcement departments have been using.
Analysis:
Laine Bergeson who I have never read any articles from wrote, “Why Does the US Have So Many Mass Shootings?” He wrote this from his individual point of
view or first person based on findings from many different studies and
information he gathered.
This article was recently written on August 24, 2015 in the
US. News.discovery.com picked it up. The
timing was just two months after the mass shooting in Charleston, S.C. The event is still fresh in the minds of
Americans.
I did not realize that the US was ranked so high in mass
shootings and that we as Americans own more guns per household than others
countries. It really makes me feel more
venerable and more aware of my surroundings than before. I feel an urgency to
be more alert.
This article was written for the people who oppose gun
ownership in the US. It definitely has a
positive twist to those who already oppose guns. It seems to add to their reasons as to why we
should have tighter guns laws.
I believe this article was written to strengthen the support
for tougher gun laws.
The article conveys the idea that if we are selling freedom
and trying to achieve the American dream than we need to have tougher gun laws
in place to protect our citizens from the crazies that want to own multiple
guns.
The article is very important to those of us who support
tougher gun control laws. I think the author has put together a significant
amount of statics to prove that the tougher laws are needed. Our society is suffering great losses because
Jim Bob can buy a gun and shoot people because he is mad. More so if people who are mentally ill,
tougher gun laws would help to keep guns out of their hands. Better screening
and more restrictions is the key to helping in the control of mass shootings.

ReplyDeleteI agree, we need tighter regulation on firearms, but should not ban them at all. Obtaining a firearm should not be as easy as it is now, and we should have more thorough databases of who owns what guns.
The 2nd Amendment of the United Constitution gives us the right to bear arms, which was originally intended to let people know they could defend themselves - wether it be against an angry, violent neighbor, or a British soldier coming to kill them and/or force them and their families out of their homes. However, times have changed. Guns are very useful and helpful when used in a responsible manner by competent, responsible adults, but unfortunately that is not the case for many gun owners today. Buying a gun is practically easy as buying the matching hunting jacket, not good for the rest of society who don't want to be attacked by those who should not have ever been able to own or get their hands on a lethal weapon in the first place.

See I feel like these things should be common sense but the NRA gets things all up in a tizzy. They just blindy disagree with even the slightest gun control laws with out actually caring to learn what it is. The kinda of gun laws obama's administration has tried implement are quiet simple. There designed to keep away from those with criminal records and those that are mentally unstable. This wouldn't affect members of the NRA at all. (except for those involved in patriot groups but that'ss a whole other story) If your a responsible gun owner which like 99% of gun owners are you wont be affected in any way.

It is a right to be able to use firearms, and there are many ways to use them appropriately. I do agree that there should be more regulations, but I don't think it's necessary ban them completely. They can require more specific training involved in purchasing a gun or a shooting license, I think that might help the ownership of firearms become narrowed down to those people that completely understand the responsibilities of being armed. -Sophie Kurzius, 8th period
