No. 3 Train Hero - Katie Schell

date of event: August 26, 2015
When riding the metro on Wednesday morning at the Bergen Street station in NYC, 37 year old Osborne heard a women screaming for help and rushed to her aid. Investigators tell us that she was being sexually assaulted by 40 year old Alvaro Dennica. Osborne immediately grabbed the man and continued to pull him all the way up the steps of the subway, out of the subway, and across Flatbush Ave. to the 78th Precinct where he then turned the offender into the authorities. Osborne suffered six stitches above the left eye and a "swollen hand that looked more like a water balloon." After the local news people came out with the story and reported that Osborne was actually studying to be a medical assistant while living in a Brooklyn shelter, an anonymous person started a GoFundMe for Osborne and in less than a week raised almost $20,000 to help pay for Osborne's expenses.

I wanted to write about news that ended well or had a positive outcome as opposed to the bad stuff we constantly hear on the radio or TV. It could all just have been up to luck but in my opinion it takes a true act of courage to do something like what Osborne did for this women. I think that most people wouldn't have known what to do. They might have called the police or ran for help, but Osborne just took it upon himself to go and help her. I'm sad to say that sex offenders, in our society, are not a rarity anymore. More and more incidents of this magnitude happen everyday and I think that it's our job to help and remedy these awful offenses. Reading this article really made me think of how important random or not so random acts of courage are. If anyone is ever in trouble or needs help-do not hesitate to give them it, you may just be saving their life.

  1. I agree and also believe that not only did this person go and help that woman but the person helping was a woman herself. I'm sorry to say that in today's day and age seeing a woman do this is awe inspiring and a rare piece of news. Most women would have seen this happening and like Katie said would have called the police or just verbally tried to stop what was going on. I am so inspired and thankful that more and more women today are starting to take matters into their own hands!

  2. People these days are scared of what might happened to them if they stick up for others. They don't even think about what the other person is going through. I am proud to say that more and more people are becoming brave and overcoming their fears. We as people need to help our generation.
