Scientist Says Future Colony On Mars Should Be Independent From Earth - Erin O’Day

With the possibility of colonizing Mars in the next couple of decades getting stronger and stronger every day, people are starting to seriously think about how life on Mars will work. How will they get their supplies? How will they be governed? Will a separate culture develop independently? Many propose that Martian colonists set up their own government to prevent the inevitable battle for independence that would happen after a while. With a couple of decades left, though, there is still plenty of time to figure out how the colony will be set up.

This article is very intriguing because it opens up a whole new level of the huge idea of colonizing Mars, which is astounding enough in and of itself. It shows that it’s not just about space exploration, it is about politics and complex motivations for leaving. I mean, they are colonizing another planet. It is just like it was 400 years ago, when Europeans made a brave decision to trek across an unknown open area to get to a NEW WORLD, having no idea what would be in store for them when they arrived. They would have to adapt to a whole new way of life in a completely unknown land, having to figure out how to fend for themselves. It is amazing that we, living in the 21st century, are going to witness take 2 of colonizing a new world, but hopefully this time, having learned from history, without the wars.

  1. This is very interesting because who wouldn't want to live on mars first of all, and also that we are mirroring our ancestors and the same dilemmas they faced in the new world. Super interesting!

  2. This is really cool. I wonder how different life will be on Mars compared to Earth. A couple of decades seems like a long time, but for such a big thing, it's pretty amazing. I would never have imagined it happening. Also it is really cool how similar it sounds to the colonizing of the New World, except in space of course!

  3. haha whaaa colinization on Mars is such a win or lose situation. I think it'd be smart to let them independently govern though. I feel like something like the American Revolution would happen all over again (but with Earth and Mars).

  4. I've never considered the colonization of Mars a possibility. Interesting!

  5. This is really interesting because most of us have never thought about living on another planet and 400 years ago I'm sure no one ever thought about living on another continent! It's funny to think that 400 years ago traveling across an ocean was a big deal because it took weeks and now it just takes hours. I think it would be interesting to see if the same thing happens with people going to mars since it seems almost impossible right now!

I find this extremely interesting as it is just history repeating itself on a much bigger scale! I never really thought of the fact that they may want independence from our government. Also something to think about is how disconnected they will be from us as it will take awhile for supplies to reach them, so we are limited to what we are able to send them. Interesting read!
