WHAT BRAZIL'S PROTESTS MEAN Julia Woltjen (3rd period)

SUMMARY:

Protestors gathered in Sao Paulo, Brazil chanting over and over "Out with the president!, Out with the president!" The crowd consisted mainly of younger college age students as well as some 50+ protestors. The problem with this protest is not their presence or their message, but the differences in what most of these protestors want. Some want Dilma, the president, impeached, some want her to resign and others just want another election. Their is no doubt in any of their minds that their government is corrupt socially, economically, and politically. But no one knows what to do about it!

ANALYSIS:

In my opinion this protest and the many others we hear about in Brazil is a good representation that their people are taking advantage of the democracy and their rights. The only problem is that they need to stay united and come up with what they actually want. This will allow for a more successful protest and they will actually get some results, rather than chanting the same thing and believing many different things.

  1. This very interesting and I agree, many of the protestors need to find an agreement on what it is exactly that they are fighting for and want change because, right now, they all want different things and if this continues some people will never be satisfied.

  2. I find it interesting how none of the protestors can really agree on how they feel about the president. They need to agree on what they think about her. If the government is very corrupt, they need to figure out what they want fast before something worse happens.

  3. It's weird that they are all chanting the same thing but have a different meaning to it

  4. I agree that in order for their protest to be successful they need to be united as one and to be united they need to have a solid idea of what their main reason for action is. Although, with this being said, we do learn from history (ex. the American Revolution) that groups of people can become united and be successful with only one similarity in reason: they both hate the same enemy (which all of these people clearly do).
