Fallen Officer: Houston, Texas by Carli Copell/ 6th period

Fallen Officer: Texas Deputy Shot

This article is about a deputy from Houston, TX. The article states that the officer was shot while at a gas pump, fueling up. The alleged shooter is said to be in custody after killing the officer "execution style." The gunshot killed him instantly. Deputy Darren H. Goforth, the victim if this murder, was said to have been walking back to his car when the shooter came up from behind and shot him, for no apparent reason. Gofourth is a husband and a father of two. His kids now have no father, and his wife.. no husband.

Analysis: After reading this article I am shocked and disgusted at how cruel people are. This person, not only took away an innocent man's life, but left behind a widowed wife and two kids that won't be able to grow up with a father. This relates to U.S. because, there has always been some sort of violence in America, against authority. For example during the  Western/Outlaw's days there were always shoot outs and fights with the authorities as well as the Indians, when they did not like something they killed. I personally believe this article can relate to all kinds of revolt towards authority from the past.

  3. Same article as well. I fully agree with you on the topic that his family will be forever changed. Recently this similar situation has been happening more now than ever and if not now it has become a major problem. I there's a continuation of revolt we will soon have no one to protect us.

  4. I am surprised they did not find any video evidence at the scene of shooting. Because it seems like most gas stations keep videotapes at the pumps.- Moriah Smith

  5. It is tragic that this man lost his life the way he did. It says a lot about the retaliation or resistance to authority going on in America right now as well as the issue of gun control. (Lia K.)

  6. This makes me so sad.. I think that we should have stricter gun control laws and background checks. I don't understand how someone could do this to another person. These types of cases are only becoming more and more common. we need to do something that will put a stop to this madness! -Kennedy Park (4th period)

  7. As Kennedy said above, I think situations like this should never been given room to happen. As unrealistic as that sounds, there still needs to be more strict and more thorough background checks and testing to those wishing to possess a gun. It's only harmful to the people around us to give a gun to someone who might be mentally unstable or emotionally troubled that will end up making impulsive decision they will regret.

I can't wait for this story to be more developed, I would like to know if the shooter believed the victim to be someone else, or if the killing was completely intentional. I'm hopping there is more information behind this, and the man did not just kill a father of two.

  9. Since the shooting was at a gas station, you would think there would have been cameras that would have at least caught glimpse of the shooter... This incident makes me wonder if the shooting was meant for this man in particular, or if it was just a matter of horrible timing for the officer. -Sophie Kurzius, 8th period
