Summary: Bomb explodes inside tourist attraction area, Erawan Shrine killing at least 20 and injuring more than 120 people. The police have arrested a suspect on August 29th. The man was arrested at his apartment in a Bangkok suburb and was suspected of being involved in the second bombing that happened the next day. However, this is not the same man that was on the surveillance camera and sketches that the police were given, but they do believe that the unknown man and the arrested man are part of the same network. In his home police have found fake passports and believe that his two Turkish passports may be artificial as well. Many investigators, military forces, and police are on the case.
Analysis: This is very big threat to Bangkok, the real question is why inside of a shrine? Does the reason of the attack have to do with religion, was it a terrorist attack? These are questions we may never be able to answer. The fact that this is a big tourist attraction makes it a perfect target, depending on the reasoning it is the best place to target one place with many people, literally two birds with one stone. Though the police are on the case this can still be only one of many, which makes investigation even more tedious because as the police have mentioned, they haven't found the guy that everyone else actually suspected. So, the real problem is trying to find everyone involved and stopping any further activity before anything gets worse and out of hand.

I think that this is real problem in the world today. Not only are people bombing shrines and tourist attractions for their religious ideas but they are doing just media attention as well. It's almost like how Donald Trump is saying such outrageous things just to become more popular in the polls. Terrorist are bombing trains and shrines just to bring attention to their cause, which has nothing to do with where they attack, that makes it even scarier. - Juliet Nelson

ReplyDeleteI think it's ridiculous how they arrested the man who was only a suspect. They obviously had the wrong guy, so what kind of evidence did they have against him? - Sophie Kurzius
