Kenneth Chang's article "NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft Has Next Mission After Pluto" was published online by the New York Times on August 28, 2015. NASA's Pluto probe, New Horizons, was able to capture a variety of captivating and extremely informational photos of Pluto during its fly by of the planet this past July. These photos will provide scientists with a myriad of new information about the otherwise unexplored planet. Now, according to the article, NASA researchers have picked MU69 as the probes new target. Images of this medium-sized icy body will complete NASA scientists' picture of the Kuiper belt. It might also give key information about how planets originally formed.
This article illustrates the advances NASA is continuing to make in the ever-changing field of space exploration. Since the Cold War, when the "Space Race" began, the United States has been a trail blazer in this field. With the new photos of Pluto and the forthcoming images of MU69, the US continues to prove its worth. This information combined with a renewed interest in space in popular culture, evident in movies like Interstellar and Gravity, could indicate strong future for space exploration.
