Summary:
Jonathan Ferrell, a 24 year old North Carolina man was shot 10 times by a police officer after he crawled out of his crashed car. He had to kick his way out of the back windshield to get out of his car. After he got out of his car, he went to a nearby house where he repeatedly knocked on the door for help. When the police arrived, one shot at him12 times, hitting him 10, killing him on the spot. The officer has been charged with manslaughter. The police were called from the people inside the house, believing it to be a break in attempt.
Analysis:
It would be very easy to get mixed up in these situations, but to go so far as to fire a gun 12 times at a man is extreme. And from a policeman. The police are supposed to be people you go to when you are in trouble and to help get you out of it, not to be the ones who ultimately kill you. In fact, studies show that you are 8 times more likely to be killed by a policeman than you are a terrorist. What has society come to when we fear the very people who are supposed to be taking care of us? I read a story somewhere where a guy was reporting a break in to his back yard shed or something like that and the dispatcher said that the police would be there in 30-60 minutes, but then the guy called back and said "oh never mind. I just killed the burglar." and within minutes the police were there. Who judges what is important in that situation? What does it say about our country when the pizza guy gets to your house faster than an ambulance would? And when policeman are charged with manslaughter.

It's so sad that this happened. I think that the police overreacted when they shot him, especially if he wasn't carrying a weapon. I can't believe this!
ReplyDeleteThis also relates to gun rights. Of course I believe that police men should be armed; that's a part of their job. But the fact that the officer shot and killed an innocent man due to poor judgement is outrageous. Guns are meant to protect in the hands of an officer, not hurt.
