I
read the article, Is It Racist To 'Call A
Spade A Spade’? by Lakshmi Gandhi. The article looks at the possible racist
meaning behind the expression ‘to call a spade a spade.” Throughout history
this phrase has developed to mean something offensive to our culture. It was
strange to see that such a commonly used phrase can have a meaning we aren’t
aware of.
The
article was published on NPR.com on September 23rd and written by an
American. Because this article was written by NPR, it may have a more American
and liberal bias but this is a very fundamental issue that doesn’t seem easily
affected by biases. In the midst of questions over modern day racism this
article is very valid, showing the racist history of our country. Gandhi wrote
this article to explore the roots of a
phrase and show how something can have a different meaning for an American
audience. I believe that the author has an informative tone with the purpose of
teaching his readers. I wasn’t aware of this before reading this story. This
article is important because of the meaning it has in race to the modern day U.S.

This is a really interesting topic, the way language changes over time fascinates me. language is so strange like that but I think it is kind of sad when a phrase that once meant "to tell it like it is" which is kind of a nice, honest thought gets morphed into a racial slur.
