"Trader Joe’s ex-president to turn expired food into cheap meals" - Emily Gray 5th period

Summary - In this article, Rauch, the Trader Joe's ex-president, explains that he wants to start a program were the less fortunate who are not able to afford the food for their diet can. This goal is achieved by selling expired foods to the community at a lower rate than the normal retail of the given food item. Organizations such as the NRDC and the Food Recovery network support Rauch idea and run their own programs too.Forty percent of food is wasted every year with expired goods and Rauch thinks he can reduce this by selling goods to the needy and less fortunate. Analysis: This article was written by Claudine Zap on September 23, 2013. She is a reporter for Yahoo! News. I believe Claudine wrote this article to inform the public of lost cost food that will be available soon but has the fact that it is expired. This article rips me in two pieces because I think it is great that low cost food will be available to the need but the fact that it is expired grosses me out. Expired food can make you sick and it doesn't look to pleasant either. I think the end result of this will be that someone buys this expired food, eats it and then they get sick, then they sue and you have a huge mess. At the very end of the article Claudine puts in a quote from Jessica Harlen, "I do like Rauch's goal, however, of helping to bring healthy foods to people who might not be able to afford it otherwise, and I also appreciate the fact that his project will reduce the amount of food that's wasted in this country.” She added, “But truthfully, as a consumer, I don't find the idea very appealing." To be honest, I agree with Jessica this is a good idea but the idea of eating rotten and expired food is gross. 1. I think it's great that Rauch wants to crate this program for less-fortunate people; however, is it a good idea to sell them expired food? I understand that it will be cheaper but if it's really expired it could make people sick.
