Leslie Kelly: Authorities find 850 illegal snakes in animal control officer’s home

Well, that's a healthy dose of irony if I've ever come across one. It was recently discovered that a Long Island animal control officer, Richard Parrinello, was keeping hundreds of illegal snakes in his own home, which included two Burmese pythons. You would think that this guy of all people would realize the danger in something like this. First off, any of these creatures could have gotten loose and seriously injured or killed someone, especially the pythons. Perhaps even worse, they might have started breeding in Long Island, which would have disrupted its ecosystem and posed threats for future generations as well as our own. According to the article, Parrinello was also running a website called Snakeman's Exotics, where it seems he was both showcasing and selling his snakes. This unhealthy attraction to the animals might cost him his job, and could have costed the safety of innocent people. Read the article here.

I think this man was well aware of the risks surrounding the housing and maintenance of these 850 snakes, he seems like a man who really knows how to deal with them, and the article said that, astonishingly, they were all cared for in the best possible way. What I'm curious about is how large his house is, the density of the snakes. About how many snakes per feet in his house? Were they in his bathroom? I wish there were more titillating details, but I suppose we have to work with the dry toast we're given.

  2. I agree with Byron. If there is anyone who should know how to handle snakes, especially dangerous ones, I would think of this guy. That doesn't make it okay for him to have close to a thousand in his house, but still better him than someone who would release then into public.

  3. Yeah, that's definitely true. I agree, I wish there had been more details. Also, I really hope the snakes find a nice new home, maybe a zoo or something I don't know. My thing is, however well you think you can handle creatures of this nature, it's still not a good idea to just have them in your house, you never know what could happen
