Summary:
Police in Charlotte, North Carolina shot and killed a man running toward them
for help. The officers were in the area because they were responding to a
“breaking and entering” call. The caller claimed that an unknown man kept
knocking on their door.
When police arrived, the man that fit
the description came running towards them. One of the officers fired their stun
gun, but missed. Another officer open fired on the man, and shot him several
times. Jonathan Ferrell was found dead and unarmed. Police believe Ferrell was seeking
assistance after crashing his car.
Ferrell
had wrecked his car nearby and was going to the closest house to receive
assistance. The woman who was inside the home saw Farrell, and didn’t know who
he was so she called police.
Officer
Randall Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter and is being held on a
50,000 bond. All three officers at the scene were placed on paid leave.
"It has devastated a family as well as caused a great deal of sadness and
anxiety in our organization," said a police representative.
Analysis:
I know that mistakes happen, but this could have been easily prevented. The officers could have used the stun gun
again instead of firing the deadly weapon on Ferrell. They could have asked him what was going on
first, since they did not see a weapon. We
as people need to stop assuming things and get our facts straight.

They could have easily handled this a different way, someone asking for car help isn't a reasob to shot someone. Even though the lady was scared, the police shouldn't handle it a totally different way.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with your analysis.
This is a simple case of police brutality. I think it is terrifying to know that the protectors of a city can also be so harmful and that less lethal weapons such as bean bag guns, stun guns, or mace should be used more as many cops apparently shoot deadly bullets on false instincts.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Ferrell was reported as a suspect of breaking and entering, don't you think police would be more caring as to stun him or taze him as he comes running, then see him unarmed? this could've been prevented and thats what is so sad. my prayers go out to Ferrell's family.
ReplyDeletealso- is it farrell or ferrell? you spelled it differently both times
