Today, in Washington D.C., 13 people were killed in a navy command complex by a navy reserve member. Although it is speculated that more than one person released rounds in assistance to the rampage, only one, now dead, shooter's identity has been confirmed. A 34 year old, male, Fort Worth resident named Aaron Alexis has been blamed for the killings and injuries caused as of now however the story behind the event has changed several times and remains unofficial as the news is so recent. As the shooting occurred, the Washington navy yard workers fled to safety, leaving 13 dead, and 3 seriously injured by gunshot. This shooting caused school lock-downs throughout the entire region, cancellation of Washington sport games and an overall traumatizing experience for all of the D.C. area. Obama responded by ensuring the capturing of any other associated murderer and possible terrorist as helicopters now circle the navy complex. Washington D.C. remains under heavy security as the lives of 11 navy members and 2 female civilians are mourned.
This recent event has left me confused. I believe that any military sector meaning the army, navy, air force etc... have the right to the access of weapons such as guns as these soldiers protect the country of America; however today's shooting, committed by a navy reserve member took 13 lives. Many sources say that the shooter, Aaron Alexis, was not a violent person and was in fact a Buddhist which raises questions. I can not help but wonder how the U.S. military branches test the mental health of any soldiers, reserve or not. Illegal possession of weapons and gun control remains a large issue however this scenario shows a new issue, one where a naval reserve, with access to government weapons caused a mass shooting. I am interested to see Washington D.C.'s reaction interns of gun control law and government regulation of gun control as the attack hit closer to D.C. than in recent history.
