Fighting Dogs Trained to Love by Gloria Jones

We've all heard of pit bulls who are trained to become fighting dogs. But what some of us don't know or acknowledge is the abuse this industry holds and the money it takes in. Puppies as young as 8 weeks old are chained around the neck by a chain about 20 lbs (4 times their weight), and they are left out in the sweltering sun and the bitter cold. This is just the first step of their "training". They later go on to suffer from brutal and horrific wounds from fights that can last up to three hours. These matches can bring in about 200,000, and that's only for one match. Recently, authorities seized 371 dogs from a dogfighting ring conducted in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas. These dogs are now being treated and cared for (physically and mentally) in a renovated warehouse by the ASPCA.

Often, when people think about pit bulls involved in dog fighting they are reminded of the many people who have been attacked by such dogs. Therefore giving pit bulls a bad reputation. However, I am a strong believer that it is the people who are entirely responsible for the "corruption" of this breed. More and more when you go to SPCA the majority or dogs needing homes is pit bulls because there is such an abundance neglected dogs of this breed. Part of the reason is because they are bred for fighting, another reason is because people are hesitant to adopt them. I think it is important to realize that these dogs, often times, are terrified and scarred. They have been brutally mistreated and have suffered through horrible circumstances. Also, it would be great if everyone could have a heart and not abuse these dogs, but it isn't that easy. Since we cannot control what everyone does, we have to take a stand for what we have control over. For example, helping with causes that assist abused animals. I think, most importantly, the authorities need to continue in their search for those who are exploiting pit bulls and crack down on dog fighting. I think this article is a perfect demonstration of how to take steps in the right direction. Not only saving these animals, but restoring them.

  1. How sad! To think that anyone could be so bitterly cruel to a poor helpless animal makes me sick to my stomach. I agree 100% that the authorities have taken the first step in the right direction and need to continue in that manner. Hopefully these fights may be stopped one day and these dogs will be able to live normal lives.

  2. I personally adore the pit bulls that I know and it's really sad when people become so fixated on one breed. Dobermans, German Shepards, now pit bulls. You're right, it's the people, not the animals. I really hope that this madness stops, but if it ever does it probably won't be anytime soon

  4. Poor dogs. I agree that it is absolutely the humans who have caused this breed of dog so much hate and trouble. I personally have 2 pit bull dogs. They are actually very smart and sweet and loving pets. I hate that because people do horrible things to them, their breed is bullied. Not fair. Any dog that is mistreated could potentially hurt or attack, not only the pit bull. I am glad that these dogs have been rescued. I hope they can find forever homes.
