12 victims slain in Navy Yard shooting rampage; dead suspect ID'd
Haley HillAt 8:20 am on monday September 16th, a gunman entered the Washington Navy Yard and started
shooting inside the building. Two witnesses said that they heard a fire alarm going off and saw a man walking down the hallway with the gun; he pointed at them, but did not shoot. People heard bullets going off and frantically scrambled down staircases to get to safety. Outside, people were even climbing over security gates to get out.
Unfortunately in all the chaos, 12 people were killed, and several are in critical condition at nearby hospitals. In the mess people were unable to clearly identify suspects but one obvious suspect was also found dead at the scene. However, this shooter was a member of the Navy's ready reserve, which means he was working in information/technology areas. There are two more people who are still suspects in the case.
After this incident the city started closing down streets, schools, and other government buildings in case this was a terrorist attack. They can't know for sure but they aren't ruling out the option. Obama states that this was "a cowardly act" that targeted people who work and serve for our country. Why they did this, we still don't know.
After I read this article I was in shock. It seems to me that after growing up in an era where shootings are common we might be immune to it, but that's not the case. I believe that as a federal building, there should've been tighter security and a tighter background check on employees who work there. I'm not saying that would've prevented it but it might've given employees or security time to stop or control the scene. One thing that seems suspicious to me is that it is five days after the anniversary of 9/11. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but something about it seems wrong.
