Changing Face of Miss America; Devon Travis

Last sunday, Nina Davuluri was crowned the newest Miss America, but she's not the typical run of the mill beauty queen. Nina is the first American-Indian to win Miss America, from New York. She was on the dean's list and she hopes to become a physician after her year as Miss America. Her father emigrated to the states 30 years ago and is now a gynecologist; their family is living the "American Dream". Congrats Nina!!

I think its really awesome that our views of "Miss America" are evolving. Our society is taking into account that there are so many other nationalitiies in America- not the everyday super tan, bleach blonde bimbo. Nina is incredibly intelligent, hard working, and beautiful to say the least. We are recognizing that Miss America is a woman and citizen of America and not just a white woman, how a lot of other nations see our people. We truly are a melting pot of religions, races, beliefs, and values.

sorry for the jumbled thoughts, stress/lack of sleep has finally caught up to me. jga

  1. I watched the Miss America Competition and I thought it was great that Nina won! Early on in the competition there were so many women that looked alike (blonde hair, blue eyes, tan) and it was good to see a different kind of beauty recognized by so many people. finally we are moving away from what we used to think beauty was and excepting and embracing different kinds of beauty. I hope our country continues on this path.

  2. This is amazing, we as America are finally getting out of our comfort zone. First we have a black president then we have an Indian Miss America! Glad to know that the face of America doesn't have to be someone cliche and we can change it up sometime. We are moving toward a better America!
