This past week, Marston Riley, a 64 year old music teacher at Maywood Academy in Los Angeles, punched a 14 year old student in the face, leading to a fight. The fight was eventually broken up by a security officer on campus, and the events were recorded by multiple student on their cellphones. The student, prior to the fight, was out of uniform and was asked politely by Riley to change. Instead, the student approached Riley shouting racial slurs and profanity at Riley including the N word. Riley has been arrested for his actions, and police will be on campus for the next week.
While, yes, the student's actions were extremely inappropriate, over the top, and unnecessary, I believe Riley should have tried to find a more peaceful way to resolve the problem. Yes, Riley's actions were quite probably heat of the moment decisions, he was the adult in the room, and should have found a more peaceful route to take with the student. The actions of the student reflect past racial tensions like those that lead up to the civil war, and it is a shame we are not past using hateful language and slurs while speaking to others.

I agree that words and such is hurtful and disrespectful but violence is not the answer which is what lead to the events back in us history.
ReplyDeleteViolence is not the answer! The students actions were unnecessary and he/she should've just done what they were told. Though, the teacher punching the student wasn't needed and it makes both of them wrong In the situation.
