Emma Burkey- She wanted to be president, but ended up jailed instead

This CNN article discusses the arrest of Diane Rwigara and the events leading up to it as she was trying to run for president in Rwanda. The government is known to be one of the most inclusive of women in the country, but her potential threat to the current longstanding president caused her to be jailed and awaiting a trial. CNN interviewed one of her supporters that has had to spend his life running to different places and never speak of his support of Diane lest he be imprisoned as well. This article is part of CNN's As Equals series.

This article has been very informative to me as I had no idea this was an issue. What I find so interesting about it is that Diane and her father were previously supporters of the current president, but when her father was killed under suspicious circumstances she dove into investigation of the government. What she found was other instances of journalists and other influential figures that had mysteriously died in varying circumstances. She wanted to fix the issue and decided to run for president. It is important to note that even if a country is accepting of women in powerful positions, one person in power could do anything to stop someone opposing them, man or woman. This article is important for the world to know about because it is an example of yet another corrupt person in power that has been framing his opponents. I mean Kagame has been president since 2000 and has basically ensured his position up until 2034. I think that tells us someone is very power hungry. Something that can relate to this story is the Gary Hart scandal when he was a democratic nominee to potentially be in the presidential race. Hart was pictured with a woman on his lap, and the scandal led him to not become the democrat to run against George H.W. Bush. Recently this year it has come out that Lee Atwater, someone close to Bush and a leader in the Republican Party, had set this up in order to secure Bush's election. This relates perfectly to Diane's story because nude pictures of her were leaked, but these photos were photoshopped by her opponents.
