"A shooting a week" An interpretation of Chicago Tribune article by Adelaide Willert

"Man who posted racist, misogynistic videos poses as customer, kills 2 women in Tallahassee yoga studio shooting"

Gary Fineout, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, has covered the most recent public U.S. shooting: one that killed two women at a yoga studio in Tallahassee. The shooter, a military veteran and teacher, had a history of racist and misogynistic views, as well as multiple accusations of sexual assault with two groping cases going to court before being dropped. He expressed his hateful views earlier today by shooting at women and black people at a Florida yoga studio. Two women were killed and five others were injured before Scott Paul Beierle (the shooter) shot himself. It has hardly been a week since the last mass shooting in the United States, and it seems as though there is a weekly tragedy in our country.

I don't know how many times we as a country, especially as a generation, have to say something about the gun laws issue before something is done. What do we need to do to get the attention of politicians? Throw a series of violent riots? Hold a convention, similar to the ones held for the Constitution and at Seneca Falls? What do we need to do as a country for our leaders - our "democratic representatives" - to make the change that we have been pleading for over the past years. Shootings have been happening for decades, and while it is a national trend that contributes to the national identity of the United States of America, it needs to stop. Do our political figures really want the nation they lead to be known as the one infamous for blockading immigration, allowing prejudice to run rampant, and simply sitting back while their people are killed? These people have the opportunity to make such a huge difference, so why don't they?
