Recently, hundreds of people have been travelling in a group from Honduras all the way to Mexico to try and cross the border illegally into the United States. Trump has made it very clear that if Mexico does not try to stop these migrants that they will cut off aid to Mexico and stop foreign alliances and trade. Not only would this harm Mexico, but it woukd harm its economy and the voice of its people. Mexico is caught in a delicate situation with each solution leading to further problems. If they do not obey Trump’s orders they risk hindering their economy, but on the other hand if they dont listen to the people and they do what Trump says they could risk losing the trust of their new government and the people.
The article was written by Kevin Sieff and Joshua Partlow on October 22, 2018 at 6:25 PM. I already had heard a basic summary of the issue before reading more indepth, and all that happened was that I saw how serious the situation actually was and how careful Mexico has to be when choosing its next steps. The article was written to mainly keep people updated, but also to inform voters of events that can influence who they vote for in the upcoming midterm elections. The article is important because it highlights tensions in our country that have a serious impact on immigration and how people see our government. We could compare this to the Mormons fleeing to Utah after facing religious discrimination. They were searching for the “promised land,” and we could relate that to how the migrants are immigrating to the US in search of work, a better lifestyle, and new opportunities.

I can't imagine the pressure the Mexican government must be feeling right now. Their decision will affect so many and there's no clear course of action. I'm curious; what is your stance? What do you feel is wisest and will benefit the most people?
ReplyDeleteTough choice... Would congress let Trump pass laws like that? Mexico is a very vital trade link to the U.S. It might backfire like the embargo act passed by Jefferson in the 1800's.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Trump's adamant statements regarding his refusal of Mexican immigrants into the United States is being used to fuel his anti-immigration campaign and raise support from Republicans for the upcoming mid-terms is appalling, with Trump having even called the caravan a "blessing in disguise". Trump is deeply dividing not only this country but our ties with other countries. His treatment of humanity is merely disgusting.
