Catalonia Marches for 1 Year anniversary of Independence Referendum
Today marked the one year anniversary of the ill-fated independence referendum and subsequent social unrest in Catalonia. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, saw several large demonstrations with numbers in the thousands. There were also demonstrations all across the countryside, with pro-independence supporters laying in the train tracks, though they were quickly dispersed. The protesters in Barcelona met resistance with riot police, a common scene since Catalonia came under direct rule from Madrid last year. Madrid wishes to have negotiations with independence supporters, but they have made it clear independence is off the table. The supporters for independence also wish to make sure they also address the other half of the population that doesn’t want independence.
The source of this, Reuters, is extremely reliable as they make sure not to report a story in black and white terms and always cover all sides. I’m happy to see that there are pro-independence supporters who wish to respect the rights and views of the other side of the population that wish to stay under the rule of Spain. It shows that they respect the fact that, with every push forward to a new goal, we make sure not to leave people behind in the dirt to suffer the unforeseen consequences of our actions.
There is a clear connection to be made between the fallout experienced following the attempted independence of Catalonia and the strife going on in America following the various acts that pushed it further to independence. The several demonstrations is reflected in the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The response by the Spanish government also mirrors that of Britain during the Revolutionary War, in which they wished to have America back in return for more autonomy within the colonies.
