Vincent Reid- Korean demilitirazation of border

Korean Removal of Firearms at Border

Following a few days of peace talks at the village of Panmunjom between the North and South Korea’s, they have decided to let up on the heavy militarization of the region, by removing firearms and watchtowers.  These changes are piled on top of several other alterations to regulations on the border, such as demining, a no fly zone, and a half in “all hostile acts”.  This all follows several months of improvement of relations be tween the two neighboring states, who have technically been at war since the Korean War, which ended in 1953.

Reuters has presented to be a rather reliable source in the past, with little to no opinionated input appearing in their articles.  I believe this is an extremely promising development to arise between the two nations, as since the end of the war, families were split between the two countries, with many close relatives not having had communication for several decades.  However, I worry about, on the topic of reunification, how these two very ideologically dissimilar countries would unify, and which ideology will take place in a new reunified Korea.

I believe the reunification of the Koreas is an issue containing much similarity to that of the process of reunification of the north and south of the United States during and after the Civil War.  While neither nation truly knew who would come out on top, both wished to be reunited in the end.  However it was under dispute who would get the true power, the north, or the south.  And that debate rings true today as well.
