Migrant Caravan Sally North

Trump has been exerting pressure onto Mexico to stop the central American migrant caravan before it reaches the US border near Brownsville, Texas. Trump claims that some members of the caravan are MS-13 gang members and from the Middle east while, in reality, they are just people trying to escape dangerous conditions to better their lives. The Mexican government has ordered the caravan to stop, but some members have elected to illegally swim across rivers in order to continue their journey. Over this past weekend, thousands of undocumented immigrants crossed from Gueatemala into Mexico in a mass migration.

This is not ththe first Centeal American caravan, and it certainly will not be the last. Trump's plan to send the army to the border seems unnecessary to me as these are just people trying to escape violence in their homelands. The treatment of these migrants is similar to the nativist sentiments we of the 1800s where Americans feared immigrants were stealing their jobs and ruining the Anerican culture even though we are a nation built upon the efforts of immigrants.

  1. Emma Burkey: I totally agree that we would not be the America we are today without the hard work of immigrants who love this country as much as the born citizens do. For Trump to assume that all of the immigrants are gang members is illogical and just him trying to up his popularity on the immigration issue for his next presidential run.

  2. I think that if people are being subjected to such trying circumstances just to come to America where the president and many others are actively prejudiced against them, it means that they are in a great amount of danger & need, and we as Americans should feel obligated to help them.
