Trump has said that he intends to pull the U.S. from a treaty signed with Russia that ended the Cold War. He also said that he is going to increase the U.S. nuclear stockpile. Trump has not given specific reasoning, except that other nations need to come to their senses, especially Russia and China. Leaders from both countries have made statements about the repercussions of a decision like this. This could lead to another arms race, which puts the whole world at risk. If the U.S. does leave the treaty with Russia, Russia can develop and mass produce as many nuclear weapons as it wants. Pulling from this treaty would not only shatter the relations between the U.S. and Russia, but also within Europe and Asia.
Nuclear weapons are a very serious issue. Russia could instantly and easily destroy the entire United States and visa versa. The Cold War was going on while Trump was alive, so clearly we have not even learned from the mistakes made in our life times. They say history repeats itself, but it is rare that it repeats less than 50 years later. It is important to see what even just a statement made by the President can do to the political climate of the entire world. Who knows what the effect would be if Trump actually made a big decision.
