Kloe Rhoden- Rihanna refuses to perform the super bowl to stand in support of Collin Kaepernick.

My article was predominantly about the movement Collin Kaepernick began. In August of 2016 Kaepernick kneeled during the National Anthem in protest to the way citizens in the African American communities were being treated by police officers. This caused a great stir because many felt attacked and disrespected by this. Many people who served in the government, army, navy etc. felt highly disrespected. Many conservatives took this as disrespect to the country, including our very own president Donald Trump. He quotes "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now," in response to the kneeling and the followers. The movement was just to question what we stand for, why stand for a country that isn't protecting your rights, why stand for the inequality we face? Later the NFL followed Trump's orders and banned players from kneeling, kicking many players off of teams. Here we are now and the NFL contacted Rihanna to play and she respectfully declined. I don't think they will be able to get an African American or really anyone who kneels with Kaepernick. Its one of those things, in my opinion I'm glad she isn't going to because the movement got pushed out of the spotlight and immediately punished. This relates back to when colonists would boycott goods in order to protest, sadly they were punished but the changes were eventually saw. Hopefully they change the rules.

  1. I think it is a tragedy that these players are having their jobs taken from them for trying to stand up for what they believe in. I really love your connection between this and the various boycotts, as back then, their views were seen as radical, but now we know they were simply pushing for their rights.

  2. Big ups to Rihanna for taking a stand. It's so terrible that Kaepernick doesn't get to play the sport he loves because he wanted to raise awareness for something he thought was important. Hopefully more celebrities will stand in solidarity with Kaepernick.

  3. It’s reassuring when we see people as big as Rihanna turning things down for a good cause. That’s how real change happens!

  4. Yes! Queen! Stanned her since the beginning of time and this makes me love her more. She peacefully protested the government by turning down one of the biggest gigs an artist could ever receive? THATS WHAT I CALLED BOLD!
